Note that the Have Your Say in your way during Pride Month has been extended to 31 July 2023.

Social justice means something different to everyone. During March - June 2023, Georges River Council is hosting four separate Your Say opportunities and corresponding launch events. Each Your Say opportunity will highlight one of the four Principles of the Social Justice Charter, including Participation, Equity, Respect, and Empowerment.

The first opportunity focused on participation - it was released in March 2023 and is still available for contributions. You can also still contribute to the April 2023 opportunity that focused on equity and the May 2023 opportunity that focused on respect.

During June 2023, we are focusing on the principle of empowerment. Council is committed to supporting individuals and groups to achieve community led goals by providing tools, resources and targeted opportunities for capacity building that empower and build resilient, self-directed communities.

Let us know ways we can grow the capacity and confidence of individuals and groups to reach their potential and become leaders in our community:

  • Why is empowerment important to you and your community?
  • What skills or knowledge could Council support you or your community group to develop to increase your capacity to achieve community-led goals?
  • Can you suggest ways in which Council could support capacity building for individuals and organisations in the Georges River area? (e.g. different ways of providing access to resources, training, skill development, etc.)
  • Council Reference Groups and Advisory Committees empower members to advocate for the needs and interests that are important to different communities within the Georges River area including:
    • Multicultural Reference Group
    • Disability and Inclusion Reference Group
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee
    • Youth Advisory Committee
    • Seniors Advisory Committee
    • Are there communities in the Georges River area whose interests are not yet represented by a Council Reference Group or Advisory Committee?

You can contribute your thoughts and suggestions via the Message Board at the bottom of this page.

If you would like to get creative and find new ways to make contributions to the Message Board that feel authentic and true to you, you can talk to us in person at a special event at Hurstville Library during Pride Month.

    • Tours of Council Chambers as an adjunct to library tour for new migrants

    • In some other countries, local government doesn’t exist or citizens don’t have opportunity to interact with government - there is a need to de-mystify local government’s role and ways in which residents may communicate with Council

    • Open days for new migrants but also longer term residents – facilitates transparency and makes Council a more welcoming place

    Safe space for LGBTQIA+ community

by Mayna Hung , over 1 year ago

Empowerment helps to promote inclusion and contribute to better health outcome for LGBTQIA+ communities.

Council can support the community by creating/maintaining a safe space for LGBTQIA+ folks. In order to ensure LGBTQIA+ to feel safe and welcome, council plays a significant role in making clear their venues are inclusive, (eg.
