Did you know Australian households throw away the equivalent of 7.7 million meals every single day? But together, we can turn food waste around.

Georges River Council has joined The Great Unwaste led by the national not-for-profit End Food Waste Australia (EFWA). This nationwide movement rallies all Australians who want to waste less food at home and help households across Australia have a positive impact on the planet, our people, and our pockets.

When will Georges River Council roll out FOGO (Food Organics & Garden Organics) bins?

Georges River Council is committed to meeting the NSW EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) mandate for all councils to provide Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) services by 2030. Council will keep the community updated as plans progress.

At this stage, Council does not plan to roll out FOGO in the next 2–3 years due to existing waste management contracts and the current limited availability of processing facilities across NSW. It’s important that councils stagger their implementation to ensure there is sufficient market capacity to process FOGO material.

More information the NSW EPA's FOGO mandate webpage. You may wish to contact the NSW Government and seek an update from them on what actions are being taken to expand market capacity to support Council's to meet the FOGO madate.

We will continue to focus on waste avoidance, reduction and recovery initiatives as part of Council's Waste Management Strategy 2021-2040, including but not limited to:

    • The Great Unwaste campaign and workshops to help households reduce and avoid food waste. The average Australian household is wasting between $2,000 and $2,500 worth of food per year.
    • Support for at-home composting and worm farming including workshops and discounts provided to residents through Compost Revolution. Learn more here: Composting and Worm Farming.
