Update

To improve pedestrian safety, Transport for NSW has collaborated with Georges River Council, to lower the speed limit on roads in high pedestrian areas in Riverwood.

Roads with a high number of pedestrians on and around them will be limited to 40km/h from Wednesday 26 November 2025.

From Wednesday 26 November 2025 ConnectSydney, on behalf of Transport for NSW, will install signage to advise of reduced 50km/h zones to 40km/h on:

  • Belmore Rd from just past Josephine St to just past Short Rd/Eldon St
  • Josephine St near Belmore Rd
  • Belmore Ln
  • Price Ln
  • Coleridge St between Belmore and Price Lns
  • Morotai Av between Price and Belmore Lns
  • William Rd approaching Belmore Rd
  • Larkhill Ave near Thurlow St
  • Thurlow St between Larkhill Ave and Belmore Rd

  • Littleton St
  • Napper Ave
  • Erskine St
  • Lauricella Ln
  • Theatre Ln
  • Webb St near Park & Ride Riverwood to Belmore Rd
  • Cairns St between Belmore Rd and Lauricella Ln
  • Short Rd from Theatre Ln to Belmore Rd
  • Eldon St between Lauricella Ln and Belmore Rd

The work will be carried out over nine night shifts between Wednesday 26 November and Sunday 14 December 2025, weather permitting.

⚠️ Lane closures may be implemented at times during our works, and traffic controllers will be on site to assist

Lower speeds improve a driver’s ability to stop quickly. A vehicle that hits a pedestrian at 50km/h is twice as likely to cause a fatality as the same vehicle travelling at 40km/h.

40km/h speed limits create a safer road environment for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback during our consultation period.

Project Background and History

The Riverwood HPAA project aims to create a safer road environment for both vehicles and pedestrians through the installation of various traffic calming devices.

Council secured funding from Transport for NSW to deliver the construction of the Riverwood HPAA project within the 2024-2025 financial year.

In May 2024, we conducted a consultation to gather feedback on the draft concept designs for the Riverwood High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) project. Thank you to everyone who took the time to review the designs and let us know what you thought.

The feedback has helped us reach the detailed design phase, and we invited our community to review these designs in a second round of consultation. The consultation was open between Monday September 23 to Friday October 18, 2024.

During this period, we asked community to review the updated designs and provide your feedback.

You can access the detailed designs by clicking the preview images below. You can also access them in list form using the documents tab on this page.

Upon completion of the Riverwood HPAA project, we will explore opportunities and conduct a detailed investigation into the implementation of additional short-term parking within the Riverwood Town Centre.
