Background

Council at its meeting on 23 August 2021 endorsed the draft Oatley Flying-fox Camp Management Plan 2021 (the draft Plan) to be placed on public exhibition for a 28 day period. Details of the process to prepare the draft Plan can be found on this page.

The Grey-headed flying-fox is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and a camp of Grey-headed flying-foxes has been established at Myles Dunphy Reserve since at least 2007. The NSW Flying-fox Camp Management Policy 2015 encourages local councils to develop camp management plans to best manage threatened flying-foxes and their impacts on the community. Council's draft plan contains the following broad objectives:

• Guide protection measures for the Grey-headed flying-foxes and their habitat to minimise population decline from habitat loss, heat stress and conflict with humans.

• Identify actions that manage public health risks and minimise impacts on the community.

• Guide stakeholder involvement, actions, roles and responsibilities in relation to the Oatley Camp.
