Place naming proposal for a new facility in Peakhurst Park

Update: June 2026

On Friday 12 June, Georges River Council held the official opening for the new Peakhurst Park Community Centre. This community facility is an important milestone that reflects the innovation, collaboration and growing diversity of the Georges River area.

The Peakhurst Park Community Centre is a new multi-purpose space where community members can come together to learn, celebrate and connect. The community facility includes a community hall, kitchen, amenities and office spaces. The public will be able to hire these spaces for their events.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback during the consultation period.

• During the public exhibition period, Council consulted widely and received strong community support for the proposed name which describes the function and purpose of the new facility.
• At the Council Meeting on Monday 23 March, Council approved the name 'Peakhurst Park Community Centre'.
• When the facility opens in April 2026, the name will be featured on signs and maps to help people find their way and use the space.

Why we're proposing 'Peakhurst Park Community Centre'

The preferred name is Peakhurst Park Community Centre because:

• It includes the location of the facility, making it easy for people to find.
• It reflects local history, linking to the original “Peakhurst Park Estate” from 1885 and early settler John Robert Peake, who gave Peakhurst its name.
• It explains the purpose of the building as a multi-purpose community space.
• It follows Council’s naming convention, which uses clear, location-based names (like Kingsgrove Community Centre and Mortdale Community Centre).
• It keeps continuity, as this name has been used informally by Council since 2022 in reports and notices.

About the facility

We are currently building a new community facility in Peakhurst Park.

Construction is completed and was officially opened 12 June 2026.

This new centre will be a multi-purpose hub where local community groups can meet, run activities, and share the space.

The design follows a Council decision made on 27 July 2020, which aims to create a facility that supports shared use by different community and stakeholder groups.

The Purpose of Place Naming

Place naming is the formal process of giving an official name to a public space, road, or geographical feature. Names are chosen according to Georges River Council's Place Naming Policy for their connection to the unique history and culture of our area.

Names for roads, parks and places must be endorsed by Council and approved by the NSW Geographical Names Board before becoming official. Whereas names for Council buildings and facilities are endorsed and approved by Council.
