We've revised our Place Naming Policy and are seeking feedback during the public exhibition period.

What is the Place Naming Policy?

The Georges River Place Naming Policy provides a consistent framework for decision making regarding the naming of places, roads and Council facilities, as well as requests for memorial plaques and trees, in the Georges River Local Government area.

Why are we updating the Place Naming Policy?

The Place Naming Policy has been completely refreshed and reorganised to make it easier to read, understand and use. The updated draft Policy keeps Council's existing place naming priorities and includes the following key improvements:

New structure

The draft Policy has a simple structure with five sections:

  • General Principles
  • Names of Council Assets
  • Memorials
  • Consultation
  • Signage

More name options

We have expanded the list of allowed name types to specifically include flora, fauna, natural characteristics and multicultural representation. The full list of allowed name types is as follows:

  • Functional names that describe the asset's purpose or defining feature
  • Commemorative names that honour historically significant people from the Georges River LGA
  • Aboriginal names (represent the history and culture of the Bidjigal People
  • Names that represent the history and culture of the Georges River LGA, including important events and industries
  • Names that relate to flora, fauna and natural characteristics of the Georges River LGA
  • Names reflecting gender diversity and multicultural representation

Memorial Plaques

The draft Policy has new simplified criteria for people to apply for a memorial plaque on a Council bench.

What is place naming?

Place naming is the process of giving an official name to a public space, road, facility or geographical feature. In the Georges River area, Council will consider names that have a connection to the unique history, culture and characteristics of the area and makes decisions based on the Place Naming Policy.

How do place names get approved?

Names for roads, parks and places are endorsed by Council and approved by the Geographical Names Board of NSW before becoming official. Names for Council buildings and facilities are endorsed and approved by Council.
