Exhibition of the Draft Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy
Georges River Council is committed to supporting and empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It will do this through partnerships that respect and recognise their culture, history, and connection to Country.
We are proud to have worked closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members who live, work, and gather on this Country, also known as the Georges River Local Government Area (LGA), to develop the Draft Strategy.
We’ve developed a strategy that reflects this commitment. It is shaped by the community's voices and views.

What is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy?
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy was created to respond to the needs and aspirations of the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
It aims to provide a foundation for Council and the wider community to learn about, value and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
It also aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through fostering employment and economic opportunities. |
To help the Council achieve these goals, this Strategy includes important priorities and actions that develop cultural awareness and promote respectful initiatives acknowledging and honouring the Bidjigal People and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Georges River area.
To create this Strategy, the Council reviewed key demographic data. It also examined existing policies and programs at all levels: local, state, national, and global. This included the Council's Community Strategic Plan, the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. This information helps shape and support the Strategy as it moves forward.
Our Focus Areas:
Culture: We will actively listen to, support and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their continuing connection to culture through learning, advocacy and immersion.
Value: We will embed cultural protocols in Council’s policy documents, engagement and consultation processes through meaningful engagement and the development of appropriate strategies, programs and initiatives.
Empower: We will create and promote meaningful opportunities that enrich the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through employment and economic opportunities. |
Featured Artwork:
The artwork featured on this webpage and throughout Council's Draft Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy was created by Darren Charlwood, a Wiradjuri artist and educator living in Sydney.
The artwork, Gurawal, is a map of the estuaries of the Georges River as well as the surrounding area. Advised and encouraged by Bidjigal Traditional Owner, Aunty Barb Simms, Darren also represented tools collected from the mangroves, the shoals of the annual silver mullet run, cobra worms (an important food source amongst the mangroves) and Gurawal, the whale.
