We are asking for feedback on a proposal to renew Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas, also known as AFZs and APAs, in selected streets, footpaths and public car parks across the Georges River local government area.


What is this about?

Council is proposing to re-establish Alcohol Free Zones (AFZs) and Alcohol Prohibited Areas (APAs) across the Georges River area for a further four years. The proposed AFZs and APAs are intended to help keep road related public areas (e.g. public road, footpath or carpark) and nonroad-related public places (e.g. parks) welcoming and safe for everyone.

They also give NSW Police and authorised Council officers a clear way to respond when alcohol is being consumed in places where it may affect community safety or public access.

Consultation is open from 29 September for 28 days. You can view the proposed AFZ and APA maps on this page and provide your feedback.


What is an Alcohol Free Zone and Alcohol Prohibited Area?

An Alcohol Free Zone is a public road, footpath or public car park where drinking alcohol is not allowed.
AFZs are created by councils under the Local Government Act 1993. They can apply to road-related public places, such as:
  • public roads
  • footpaths
  • public car parks
  • areas connected to roads and transport corridors.
AFZs are different from Alcohol Prohibited Areas, which usually apply to parks, reserves, beaches and other non-road public places. To learn more about AFZs and APAs, please read our FAQ on this page.


Where are the proposed Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas?

Council is proposing to re-establish AFZs and APAs in the following centres:

  • Railway Parade (Corner Gray Street and Gladstone Street);
