Consultation has concluded
Georges River Council has resolved to endorse a Draft Georges River Council City Partnerships Policy at its meeting on Monday 19 December.
The City Partnerships Policy guides the formation and maintenance of City Partnerships between Council and other cities, both international and within Australia.
The move follows the recent implementation of the Australian Government’s Foreign Arrangements Scheme (FAS) under the Foreign Relations Act 2020, which requires the Minister of Foreign Affairs to be notified when a local government enters, or proposes to enter an arrangement with a foreign entity.
A foreign arrangement is defined under the Act as an arrangement established with a foreign entity, irrespective of whether other entities are also party to the arrangement, and can include written arrangements, agreements, contracts, understandings or undertakings, whether legally binding or not.
Despite no City Partnerships being established since proclamation, Georges River Council retained a Sister City Policy, which has been in use since July 2017and was due for review in July 2021.
While the new policy was aimed at incorporating Council’s legislative obligations under the FAS, it also affirmed Council’s commitment to meeting community expectations on how Council conducts activities with organisations abroad.
