Place Naming Proposal for new sporting facility in Olds Park
We are seeking community feedback on the name of the new sporting facility currently under construction at Olds Park, 630 Forest Road, Penshurst.
Council is considering two potential names for the new facility:
St George Sports Pavilion
Donohue Felstead Sports Pavilion
Community feedback will help Council make a final decision on the name of the facility.
How does Place Naming work in Goerges River?
Place naming is the formal process of giving an official name to a public space, road, facility or geographical feature. Names are chosen according to Georges River Council's Place Naming Policy for their connection to the unique history and culture of our area.
Names for roads, parks and places must be endorsed by Council and approved by the NSW Geographical Names Board before becoming official. Whereas names for Council buildings and facilities are endorsed and approved by Council.
Background of the proposed names
Potential Name: 'St George Sports Pavillion'
This proposed name reflects the purpose of the building as a multi-sport facility serving both the Georges River area and the wider St George district. The term "Sports Pavilion" is consistent with the naming of similar Council facilities.
The name also recognises the long connection between Olds Park and three sporting organisations that carry the St George name:
St George Australian Football Club
St George District Cricket Club
St George Little Athletics Club
Potential Name: ‘Donohue Felstead Sports Pavilion’
This proposed name commemorates two people who made significant contributions to the community through their connection to Australian Rules Football (AFL) and the St George Australian Football Club (AFC):
Brendan Donohue (1950–2025) was a long-serving member of St George AFC.
On the Executive Committee he was Vice President (2006–2009), President (2009–2019) and was Secretary from 2019 until his passing. He was instrumental in securing grant funding for the new facility as well as previous turf and amenities upgrades at Olds Park. He was made a Life Member of St George AFC in 2018 and of the Sydney AFL in 2025.
His contribution to community sport is recognised by three awards bearing his name: the Brendan Donohue Memorial Trophy (Club Person of the Year, St George AFC), the Brendan Donohue Trophy (Coach of the Year, UNSW Rugby), and the Donohue Administrator of the Year Award (AFL Sydney) which recognised his dedication and excellence in administration.
Cyril Sydney "Syd" Felstead (1919–2011) was a pioneering figure in Australian Rules Football in Sydney and a long-serving member of St George AFC.
A player from 1938–1955, he became a Life Member in 1955, served as Club President from 1955–1975, and was one of the five inaugural inductees to the St George AFC Hall of Fame in 2005.
A Royal Australian Air Force veteran of World War II, Syd chaired efforts to establish St George junior clubs in the 1950s and was instrumental in securing the Club’s first 21-year lease at Olds Park in the 1960s, relocating its home ground from Hurstville Oval. His service to football was recognised with the AFL Merit Award in 1963 and AFL NSW Life Membership in 1967.
How was this decision reached?
At Council's Community and Culture Committee that was held 12 October 2026, the Committee recommended that Council endorse both proposed names to placed on public exhibition for community feedback. This recommendation was endorsed at the Council Meeting held 26 October 2026.
