Consultation has concluded
Georges River Council is proposing the name 'Meryl Burton Reserve' for the currently unnamed reserve located on the corner of Warwick Street and Gloucester Road in Beverly Hills, further to Council Resolution COM053-20.
This reserve is informally known as 'Gloucester Road Reserve No 5'. A previous proposal to name this reserve after the road it is next to (Warwick Street) was disallowed by the NSW Geographical Names Board.
The proposed naming will honour the significant contribution to the welfare of the community made by local resident Meryl Burton OAM. Mrs Burton was a long term resident of Hurstville, living nearby the reserve in Carrington Avenue. She maintained a continuing involvement with a number of community associations and bodies throughout her life. Among the many local groups to which Mrs Burton contributed were the Roselands Red Cross, the Hurstville Historical Society, the Hurstville Community Committee and the NSW Justices' Association. Mrs Burton received a Queen's Birthday honour in 1990 and died in 2004.
This name was chosen according to the Georges River Place Naming Policy for its connection to the unique history and culture of our area. Council’s priorities include names derived from Aboriginal culture, early settlers, significant people, activities and industries as well as gender diversity. No alternative Aboriginal names have been identified regarding this particular location.
