Pillar 5: Our Place in Sydney
Consultation has concluded
Build strategic relationships and alliances with key partners
The ability to collaborate is a key element that will drive innovation. There are many significant organisations in our area and beyond in the health, finance and education sectors that could partner with Council by collaborating on current innovative activities and new opportunities. More information can be found in the Innovation Strategy, Georges River 2050 Leading for Change, Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy and Kogarah Investment Attraction Strategy.
Express trains on the T4 line to stop at Kogarah and introduce an express train on T8 line to the CBD
The change in timetable on the T4 line where express trains no longer stop Kogarah is a major issue for the many commuters to the St George Hospital and Kogarah’s numerous education facilities. There is currently no express train on the T8 line linking Kingsgrove to the city. More information can be found in the Georges River LSPS 2040; Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan and Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy.
Cycleways along the T4 and T8 lines
Improving cycling as a transport option through safe, dedicated and better connected cycling networks around centres and public transport interchanges to make this active form of transport enjoyable and realistic options, especially for short trips. More information can be found in the Georges River LSPS 2040 and Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan.
River Rail - Rail link from Kogarah to Parramatta via Bankstown
This new ‘north-south’ rail corridor would create an important link to the ‘second city’ – Parramatta, which will help grow the economy and enhance the opportunities for our community while having the potential to reduce pressure and congestion on existing infrastructure and routes. More information can be found in River Rail. Kogarah to Parramatta Rail Link , Georges River LSPS 2040 , Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan and Georges River 2050 Leading for Change.
Extension of the southeast mass transit / rail link from Randwick to Kogarah and Miranda
Better connections and services between our centres and other metropolitan strategic centres around Greater Sydney will improve quality of life and productivity for people who live and work in our area. This is a strategic link, connecting the major medical precincts of Randwick and Kogarah. More information can be found in the Georges River LSPS 2040 and Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan.
Hurstville (or Kogarah) to Macquarie Park via Rhodes (through Burwood or Strathfield) rail link
Better connections and services between our centres and other metropolitan strategic centres around Greater Sydney will improve quality of life and productivity for people who live and work in our area. This is a strategic link, connecting north – south to the major employment centre of Macquarie Park. More information can be found in the Georges River LSPS 2040 and Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan.
Work with NSW Government in the promotion of the Sydney 24 Hour Economy Strategy
In Georges River there is enormous potential to grow our night time offering and enjoy all the social, economic and cultural benefits it has to offer. Diverse options lead to a more connected and resilient community, help create a more inclusive nightlife, improve safety and reduce crime. A great night time economy can transform a waning town centre and avert the decline of high street retail. More information can be found in the Night Time Economy Study, Kogarah Investment Attraction Strategy and Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy
Shared facilities across Local, State and Federal Government (eg schools, health).
Creating opportunities to increase shared use and more flexible use of new and existing facilities can promote greater connectivity between our residents. Shared community and recreation facilities unlock the down time of facilities and provide resources for the community. More information can be found in the Georges River LSPS 2040; Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan and Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy
More government land being used for open space
Coordinate public spaces and consider government owned land to investigate opportunities for open space, multi-use spaces, and sporting facilities. Identify and investigate how NSW Government owned land can be used to build connections. More information can be found in the Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy.
Redevelopment of Netstrata Jubilee Stadium
Netstrata Jubilee Stadium and adjacent Kogarah Park is a multipurpose stadium used for rugby league and football at the highest levels and also hosts regional and community-based sports. A sports and entertainment precinct could be a meeting and celebration space for the local community and visitors. More information can be found in Georges River 2050 Leading for Change, Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy.
Kogarah innovation/start up precinct
Increase knowledge-intensive jobs and support the area’s role as a health, knowledge and wellness precinct.
Investigate the potential for, and viability of, a medical research institute associated with existing services. More information can be found in the Kogarah Collaboration Area Strategy and Kogarah Investment Attraction Strategy.
Relocation of government jobs to our area
Providing more local job opportunities could be achieved by actively partnering with the NSW Government to work towards the Hurstville and Kogarah 2036 job targets. More information can be found in the Economic Development Strategy and Kogarah Investment Attraction Strategy.
M6 Motorway Stage 2 , A3 and A6 corridor capacity and the Princes Highway/Park Road intersection upgrade
Good access around Sydney and the Airport is one of the key features of our area; however, this will need to be expanded with these upgrades and connections for future road transport options. More information can be found in the Georges River LSPS 2040 and Local Strategic Planning Statement 2040 – Implementation Plan.
Investment in arts and culture
A key aspect of a vibrant and culturally rich place is the health of its art and culture scene. Live music, performance, visual art, cinema, celebrations and festivals are all cultural activities, and all create an atmosphere that contributes significantly to an area’s desirability as a place to live, work and visit.
