Overview

Building on the success of the two Skate, Break and Build events held in August 2024, we are exploring ideas for the next stage of the Places to Love program.

We want to create a unique public artwork that helps create a vibrant nighttime experience of connection and play at Olds Park extending from the skatepark to under-utilised areas of the park. The theme, 'Play at the Park after Dark' aims to facilitate community interactions by exploring gamification principles.

Gamification is the use of game-like elements in everyday activities to make them more fun and engaging.
It takes ideas from games—like points, rewards, and challenges— to make activities feel more like a game.

We want to hear from you about how to create a more vibrant and inclusive experience of Olds Park Skate Park at night. You are invited to provide feedback and share examples that inspire you about the idea 'Play at the Park After Dark' to help inform the next stage of the Places to Love program.

Artistic Vision

We envision an artwork that embodies the playful spirit of games to encourage people to engage with each other in safe, fun, and creative ways. The work aims to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity, inviting visitors of all ages to explore the park in a new way, independently or with others.

Design Elements:

Location: different areas of Olds Park such as the Skate Park, walking track and broader areas around amenities.

Materials: Use durable, weather-resistant materials that can withstand the elements and are safe for everyone. Consider elements that can glow or illuminate at night, creating a safe and inviting atmosphere.

Interactive features: incorporate elements and markings inspired by games. Think oversized board games and opportunities to test interactive technologies such as light and motion sensors that require teamwork or movement. These features will encourage community members and visitors to meet and play together to create new experiences.

Lighting: Consider temporary dynamic lighting that enhances the park’s natural beauty at night.

Community Engagement

We believe that the heart of this project lies in the voices of our community. We’ve hosted surveys, interviews, brainstorming sessions, and workshops to gather ideas from the local community to inform the direction. This collaborative approach reflects the diverse backgrounds and interests of everyone in our local community.

You are invited to provide feedback and share examples that inspire you about the idea 'Play at the Park After Dark' to help inform the next stage of the Place to Love program.

Our goals

Create a welcoming, playful space that encourages nighttime visits and increases time spent at Olds Park.

Finding ways to invite and educate different skill levels, ages, and backgrounds to share the skatepark space in a safe and inclusive way.

Celebrate the cultural diversity of our community by exploring and reflecting various games and traditions from around the world.

Prioritise inclusivity and promote a future “park for all” philosophy.

About the Places to love Program

Georges River Council has been announced as a round three partner under Transport for NSW’s Places to Love program. This grant gives Georges River the opportunity to explore how public spaces, such as streets, open spaces, and public facilities, can be used for temporary nighttime activities.

The Places to Love program collaborates with a number of pilot councils on demonstration projects that trial improving walkable access to, and the quality of, local public space in and around transport hub precincts. The program trials temporary changes that can inform and guide future interventions to public space. The demonstration projects are a way to quickly test how to make public spaces more vibrant and active using trials, pop-ups and semi-permanent changes to test ideas and build the case for longer-term change.
