Oatley Park Security Upgrades
Oatley Park is one of our local area's most loved and recognised parks.
The park features sporting fields, play equipment and picnic areas, bush and walking tracks, and access to Jewfish Bay Baths and Lime Kiln Bay Wetlands. As a designated wildlife protection area, Oatley Park is home to native animals and plants that need our protection.
February 2026 Update
Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback on the proposed Oatley Park security upgrades. Your input has helped Council refine the project and ensure the changes balance park protection, community safety, and access for all visitors. The final design site plan can be viewed below:
Below is a summary of what we heard during consultation and how Council is responding.
| What we heard | How Council is responding |
|---|---|
| Many people strongly supported the security gate proposal and felt it is needed to help protect the park. | Council is proceeding with the Oatley Park security upgrades, including new security gates and sandstone blocks to reduce unauthorised vehicle access and protect community facilities. |
| The community wanted clear, consistent gate closing times instead of “dusk”, and for Council to ensure gates close on time. | The main gate on Oatley Park Avenue will close at 10.00pm every day. Three other gates will close at 7.00pm. Times remain the same year‑round, and staff/contractors will ensure they are locked at these times. |
| People wanted gate times that balance evening sport, public safety and protection of the natural environment. | Closing times allow evening sport to finish while limiting late‑night vehicle access and antisocial behaviour. Earlier closure protects local plants and animals. |
| Community members asked for more information about vandalism and the new arrangements, and some requested cameras or car park upgrades. | New gates and security measures are being installed, and signs are in place at key entrances. Cameras and car park upgrades are not included but have been recorded for future planning. |
| People wanted reassurance that emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists would still have safe access. | Security contractors and key staff will have keys for emergency access. The gates restrict vehicles only. Pedestrians and cyclists retain full access. |
| The community wanted reassurance that local plants and animals would be protected, including Lime Kiln Wetlands. | No trees or large native plants will be removed. Contractors will follow environmental protection rules. The fire trail gate has been repaired to help manage access to the wetlands. |
| Some people preferred bollards instead of sandstone blocks. | Council will install large natural sandstone blocks. They are heavier and more secure than bollards and better match the park’s bushland character. |

Project background
What did we propose?
Recently, we have received reports of vandalism and damage to trees in the park. To help address these issues, we are proposing to install security gates that will better manage park access after closing time. We want to share this information with you and work together to improve park safety.
We are proposing to install two new security gates further into the park with signage showing opening and closing times. We will also install sandstone blocks around the sporting field car park to improve safety and manage vehicle access.
What will change?
The two new gates (shown in blue in the above map) will open at 6:00am and close 7:30pm daily.
The main gate at Oatley Park Avenue currently opens at 6:00am and closes for vehicles at 'dusk'. Under our proposal, this main gate will open at 6:00am and close at midnight.
This means you will still be able to access the sporting oval throughout the evening.
The main park entrance at Douglas Haig Street will also be updated to open at 6:00am and close at 7:30pm.
All signage across the park will be reviewed and updated to show these times when the gates are installed.
Will I still be able to use the sporting fields in the evening?
The main gate at Oatley Park Avenue will remain open until midnight. This means you can continue to access the sporting fields after 7:30pm without any change to your current arrangements. The main gate opens at 6:00am and closes at midnight every day, giving you full evening access to the sporting areas of the park.
Why are we installing these gates?
The earlier closure will help to reduce vandalism and damage to trees in parts of the park. This earlier closing time will also help protect the bushland and wildlife areas in the park. Many native animals are most active at dusk and during the evening.
