We’re launching a new community project that celebrates the people who live, work, and play here — and we want you to be part of it! Inspired by portrait projects like Humans of New York, we are documenting what Georges River looks like today. Through photography, recorded storytelling, and creative displays, we’ll showcase the faces, voices, and stories that make Georges River vibrant, diverse, and unique. This is your chance to help shape a living snapshot of our community.

What is Humans of Georges River?

Humans of Georges River will capture beautiful portraits of participants — people who live, work and play in this LGA. We'll also provide the opportunity for participants to share their story, exploring ideas of identity, belonging and community. These portraits and interviews will be added into the Community History collection, becoming a record of what Georges River really looks like today. We'll also produce an exhibition and a gorgeous book!


Why should you get involved?

There are so many reasons to get involved in Humans of Georges River!

  • Be part of history: Your voice and image could be featured in a book, exhibition, and in the councils Community History Collection.
  • Celebrate your community: Help show what Georges River looks and sounds like right now. Bring visibility to your community, challenge misconceptions and celebrate your history.
  • Connect with others: Share your story, hear others, and build something meaningful together.

Participants in this project will take part in a recorded interview where they will have the chance to tell their story - exploring their identity, community and connection to place. This will be followed by a session with a professional photographer who will capture a portrait that reflects and celebrates their personality.

Portraits and interviews will be added to the Community History collection, developed into an exhibition and published in a beautiful book.

    Yes, photographs can accommodate up to 5 people, however interviews are best at a maximum of 2 people.

    Sure, if you have a particular item that means a lot to you and you'd like to be photographed with, or if you have additional personal photos, items or documents thatyou would like to share alongside your interview, notify the Humans of Georges River team and let us know. There may be some restrictions on some items dependant on size.

    Unlike Humans of New York, we're not taking candid photos on the street. The photos will be in a photo studio, and we have a few different portrait styles to choose from. During your interview, we'll select a portrait style that we think will best allow you and your personality to shine. We'll discuss this with you before your portrait as well.

    Interviews will be conducted in the Hurstville Library Sound Booth. Portraits taken in the Hurstville Library Media Lab.

    If you have a service animal, then yes! Otherwise, no, unfortunately we can't allow animals in the library or media lab.
