Tasmanian Soldiers trained in Oatley Park in 1942 to 1943- nominated by Oatley Heritage and Historical Society

Groups of Tasmanians were brought to Oatley Park in 1942-43 to train before being sent to Northern Queensland for further training. They left behind many traces of their stay including a small piece on concrete with their names and reference to their State. There stay in Oatley was documented by locals.

Sir Jack Brabham

Parents had a fruit shop in Forest Road. Left school, got a job in a garage in Mortdale (Pitt Street?). After WW2 lived at 36 Walter Street, Mortdale, where he did much of his initial work in the fibro shed. And the rest is history. (Sorry, another old white bloke)

Bidjigal people of the Eora nation

We should be honouring our First Nations people who inhabited the area for 60,000 years, rather than some old white blokes who’ve only been around for a handful of generations.

A marker with history at the property originally known as "Collaroy" (now Gardens on Forest) at 764 Forest Rd, Peakhurst, would be good.

Harness Cask Point

Harness Cask Point is probably one of the most culturally significant places in the whole of Australia, as it is technically the first site visited by The First Fleet in 1788 in the days prior to their arrival at Sydney Cove. Departing from Cape Town on 12 November 1787, the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay on 18 January 1788. Harness Cask Point is significant because it is the first place the First Fleet set foot on Australian soil when they replenished their water barrels from the tank-stream located where the Kyle Bay bowling club is situated. Because Kyle Bay was too shallow for entry by the supply ships, they were moored at Harness Cask Point and long boats were dispatched with water 'casks' or barrels attached to row them to the tank stream outlet for filling. Whilst Sydney Cove was decided upon a better location for the first settlers than Botany Bay, the first British footprints on Australian soil were made at Merriman Street Reserve.
