Help us refresh our Permanent Exhibition at Hurstville Museum & Gallery
Hurstville Museum & Gallery is a local museum in the Georges River area that shares the stories of the community’s history, culture, and people. It is operated by Georges River Council and is located at 14 MacMahon Street, Hurstville. It holds many unique artworks, objects and collections that show how the area has changed over time. The museum is free to visit and is a place where everyone can learn about the St. George region.
We are planning to redesign of our permanent exhibition St. George Stories: People – Places – Community in 2025. We would like our community's help to inform how we best tell the story of the Georges River local area and celebrate what makes it our place to call home.
What is St. George Stories?
"St. George Stories: People – Places – Community" is the museum’s permanent exhibition. It tells the story of the St. George region from the earliest people to present day communities. The exhibition looks at who has lived here, how the community has grown, and how life has changed over the years. It shares stories about the First Nations people, migrants, and the many cultures that make up the area.

Why we are refreshing the Exhibition
The exhibition was first set up in 2015. Since then, our community's needs and aspirations have changed, and we want to better reflect the rich and diverse history of our area. The current exhibition does not fully show the important history of First Nations people or the many migrant communities living here now. We also want to make the museum a space that is easier for everyone to enjoy. This means looking at refurbishing displays to meet current trends in museum interpretation, design and appeal to a wider audience.
What kind of changes are being considered?
The new exhibition will include more objects from the museum’s collections, new graphics, and videos to make the stories come alive. Visitors will be able to see and hear many different stories and perspectives about the St. George area. The project is also supported by a NSW Premier’s Social Cohesion grant, which helps local councils improve community connections.
How can our community be involved?
We want to hear from you! Your ideas and stories will help shape the new exhibition. We are especially interested in hearing from different groups in the Georges River community. This includes people from diverse cultural backgrounds and First Nations communities.
