We want to hear your feedback on the Draft Verge Maintenance Policy.
What is this Policy about?
A verge, sometimes called a nature strip, is the area between a property boundary and the kerb or edge of the road. This can include the front, side or rear nature strip where a property has more than one street frontage.
We have prepared a Draft Verge Maintenance Policy to provide a clear and consistent approach to how street verges are managed across the Georges River area.
The Draft Policy explains who is responsible for maintaining verges and when Council may need to take action for safety, access or city presentation reasons. We are now seeking feedback from the community before the Policy is finalised.
What does the Policy do?
The Draft Verge Maintenance Policy will help Council:
- clarify who is responsible for looking after street verges
- confirm that residents, property owners, strata managers and businesses are generally responsible for maintaining the verge next to their property
- explain Council’s role in maintaining verges in high priority areas, or where safety, access or city presentation issues need to be addressed
- support residents and businesses who want to take part in the Verge Garden Program
- set clear expectations for safe and compliant verge works
- explain when Council may step in to manage hazards, blocked access or non-compliant verge works
- align day-to-day verge maintenance with Council’s operational procedures.
Why is Council preparing this Policy?
Verge maintenance can affect many people. Council is preparing this Policy to make verge maintenance responsibilities clearer and more consistent across the local government area.
The Draft Policy provides a clear framework so residents, businesses and Council staff can better understand their roles.
How to Be Involved
The Draft Verge Maintenance Policy is currently on exhibition from 12 June until 10 July 2026.
During this time:
- The Draft Policy is displayed on this page under the Document Library section
- You can provide feedback or lodge a submission about the Draft Policy
