We want to hear your feedback on the Draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy.

What is this Policy about?

Georges River Council is planning for the future use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a safe, transparent and responsible way.

AI tools are increasingly used across organisations to support services, improve efficiency and assist decision‑making. While these tools can deliver benefits, they also raise important questions about privacy, fairness, accountability and trust. Council has prepared a Draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy to guide how AI may be used across Council operations. The Policy sets clear rules and safeguards to ensure AI is used responsibly and with appropriate human oversight.

We are now seeking feedback from our community before the Policy is finalised.

What does the Draft Policy do?

The Draft AI Policy will help Council:
  • Use AI in a way that is ethical, safe and accountable
  • Protect community data, privacy and security
  • Be transparent about where and how AI is used
  • Ensure people remain responsible for important decisions
  • Support innovation that improves services for the community

Is this a new Policy?

Yes. The Draft Policy aligns with NSW Government best practice, including the NSW AI Assessment Framework.

Key features of the Draft AI Policy include:
  • Adoption of the NSW AI Ethics Principles
  • A risk‑based approach to AI use (from low to elevated risk)
  • A public AI Register to improve transparency
  • Strong controls for privacy, data security and records management
  • Clear requirements for human oversight of AI‑supported decisions
  • Training and capability building for Council staff
