Thank you to everyone who viewed and contributed to our Draft Social Justice Charter. At the Council Meeting held on Monday, 22 August 2022, Council adopted the Georges River Social Justice Charter. You can view the Charter here, the documents tab of this page, or on our website.

Background

Georges River Council is committed to social justice and building a city that supports and encourages its community to fulfil their aspirations.

Council has a responsibility to uphold principles of social justice and strive to remove any barriers that its community members face. There are people in our community who are met with additional challenges because of their race, ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, age, disability or sexuality.

We need to ensure the vulnerable in our community are given adequate support and are provided with a platform to express themselves and actively participate in the decisions that affect their lives. Through the draft Social Justice Charter, we strive to achieve positive outcomes for people and build an inclusive, cohesive and resilient community.

The draft Social Justice Charter, and subsequent work Council will undertake in partnership with key stakeholders and organisations, will seek to remove layers of disadvantage.

The Draft Charter

In 2020, CAPIRE was engaged to develop a draft Social Justice Charter in consultation with Council staff and Councils various community advisory groups and panels. The consultation findings together with local research have informed the draft Georges River Council Social Justice Charter (the Draft Charter). The following social justice principles have been developed as part of the Draft Charter:

• Participation – Everyone has an opportunity to shape their community.
• Equity – Everyone has fair and balanced access to opportunities, resources, information, facilities and services.
• Respect – Everyone in the community is respected and valued.
• Empowerment – Everyone is supported to thrive in the way they choose.

How can you be involved?

Georges River Council is seeking community feedback regarding the Draft Social Justice Charter which is on Public Exhibition from 1 July - 28 July 2022.

Community feedback is essential in helping guide us in our decision-making process. Your feedback will influence the choices we make and help to ensure we are on the right path to achieving and managing our community's overall vision.
