Council announces Verge Garden Competition Winner!

Council is pleased to announce Rita Ziolkowski as the winner of the Verge Garden Competition. Rita's entry secured the highest number of votes, showcasing her dedication and enthusiasm for the initiative. In recognition of her achievement, Rita will be awarded a $250 voucher, redeemable at the local gardening retailer, Altra Nursery, situated in Mortdale.

We're thrilled to announce that the Verge Garden Competition deadline has been extended to 15 January 2024 to ensure everyone has ample time to participate.

If you aren’t currently registered but would like to be involved, please take this opportunity to register and bring your creative verge garden ideas to life. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just getting started, the Verge Garden Program is a fantastic way to contribute to the beauty of our community.

Verge Garden Competition

In 2022, Council launched the Verge Garden Program, which allows residents and businesses to garden on the verge, also commonly known as the “nature strip”. This is the area of public land located between a property boundary and the road kerb.

To create a verge garden under the program, participants must first simply register with Council by completing a simple online registration form and comply with the Verge Garden Program Guidelines - you can use the Guidelines Checklist to help determine whether you can comply with the Guidelines.

Background

Council is holding a Verge Garden Competition (the Competition) for the first-time across Spring 2023 for anyone registered in Council's Verge Garden Program.

The entries with the highest number of votes will be awarded as winner/s of the competition and receive a $250 voucher to use at local gardening retailer Altra Nursery located in Mortdale.

To enter in the competition:

  • ensure you've registered in the Verge Garden Program;
  • access the "Verge Garden Competition" tool below; and
  • upload a photo of your verge garden to the page for people to vote on.

To vote on your favourite verge garden:

  • access the "Verge Garden Competition" tool below; and
  • click the 'heart icon' on the verge garden you like the most.

Voting will close on 30 November 2023 with the winner/s to be announced in December 2023.

Terms and Conditions

  • By entering the competition, entrants agree that Council:
    • may publish a photo of their verge garden on Council's communication channels (such as website and social media) such as future promotional material for the Verge Garden Program; and
    • reserves the right to remove any entries which may be contrary to the spirit of the competition.


Review of the Verge Garden Program

When Council introduced the Verge Garden Program, there was a requirement that the program had to be reviewed after 12 months.

As part of reviewing the program, Council is seeking feedback from community about the program. This feedback will help us improve the program.

To provide feedback, please:

  • complete the below short online survey titled 'Verge Garden Program Review Survey'; and/or
  • make a written submission, which can be directed to Council's Research and Social Policy Officer, Hamish McIvor, via email.
